Type facts worth knowing
171 possible combos
18 types make 153 unique pairings plus 18 singles. Generation 9 still hasn't used them all, which leaves fan games plenty of empty niches to fill.
Immunities stack, weaknesses multiply
A dual type multiplies both types' defenses together. Two weaknesses to the same attacking type become a 4× hit - and one immunity erases a hit no matter what the other type thinks of it.
Normal/Fighting is a ghost story
Normal is immune to Ghost and Fighting is weak to Psychic and Fairy - but Normal/Fighting together also gains a Ghost resistance tradeoff and a Dark weakness. Pairings rarely behave the way gut instinct says.
From random types to real teams
A type roll is usually the start of something. Found a pairing you like? See which actual species carry it with the Pokémon generator's type filter, or slot it into a full six with the team generator. If you're designing an original species, the name generator will name it and the natures guide will tell you how it should play.
Common questions
How many Pokémon type combinations are there?
There are 18 single types and 153 possible dual-type pairings, so 171 combinations in total. A pairing counts once no matter the order - Fire/Water and Water/Fire defend identically.
What is the best defensive type combination?
Steel paired with almost anything is famously sturdy - Steel/Fairy and Steel/Flying each resist or ignore most attacking types. The tradeoff always shows up somewhere, usually Fire, Fighting or Ground.
What is the worst type combination defensively?
Grass/Ice is the usual answer: it collects weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Rock, Bug and Steel while resisting very little. Grass/Rock is similarly rough.
Can a Pokémon have three types?
Not naturally. Every Pokémon is one or two types. Moves like Trick-or-Treat and Forest's Curse can add a third type in battle, but it wears off.
Why use a random type generator?
Fan-game makers use it to build original species, challenge runners use it for monotype or dual-type restrictions, and it is an easy way to learn matchups you never memorized - every combo card shows exactly what it fears and what it shrugs off.
About Pokémon Types and the Type Randomizer
All 18 types in one place
Pokémon has 18 types: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy. A Pokémon can have one or two, which gives 171 possible combinations. Each type has its own strengths, weaknesses and immunities, and a dual type multiplies them together.
Using random types for challenges
Type randomizers are popular for monotype and dual-type challenge runs, for fan game design, and for learning the type chart without memorising it. Every roll here shows what the combination fears and what it resists, so you see the trade-offs right away.
From a type roll to a team
When you land on a combination you like, find real species with it using the generator's type filter. If you are designing an original species, the name generator can name it and the fusion generator can mix two existing ones.
