NINE REGIONS, ONE DEX

Explore Pokémon by generation

Gen 1 - Kanto (151 Pokémon)

The original 151 from Red, Blue and Yellow (1996). Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and the classics most people picture first.

Gen 2 - Johto (100 Pokémon)

One hundred new species arrived with Gold, Silver and Crystal (1999). Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile and favorites like Umbreon and Espeon.

Gen 3 - Hoenn (135 Pokémon)

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald (2002) brought Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip - and introduced abilities and natures to the series.

Gen 4 - Sinnoh (107 Pokémon)

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum (2006). Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup, plus the physical/special split that reshaped battling.

Gen 5 - Unova (156 Pokémon)

The largest single generation, from Black and White (2010). Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott lead a roster praised for its story.

Gen 6 - Kalos (72 Pokémon)

The smallest generation, from X and Y (2013). Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, Mega Evolution and the debut of the Fairy type.

Gen 7 - Alola (88 Pokémon)

Sun and Moon (2016) introduced Rowlet, Litten, Popplio and regional variants - Alolan forms of Kanto classics.

Gen 8 - Galar (96 Pokémon)

Sword and Shield (2019). Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble, Gigantamax forms and the open Wild Area.

Gen 9 - Paldea (120 Pokémon)

Scarlet and Violet (2022). Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly and the Paradox Pokémon - ancient and future twists on familiar species.

Use the generation filter in the generator to draw from a single era, or mix generations for a wider pool. The favorite picker and team generator support the same filters.

ROLL WITH A PURPOSE

More than six random names.

How to use the random Pokémon generator

Start with a free roll if you just want inspiration. Narrow the pool by type or generation when you're planning a themed team. Each eligible form has an equal chance of being drawn; with duplicate species disabled, the tool picks a species first and then a matching form.

A random team is a starting point, not a battle-ready recommendation. Check typings, abilities and base stats in the detail panel, then make changes for your game and format. Challenge mode sets a smaller, practical pool, but it doesn't enforce encounters, move legality or official tournament rules.

Questions before you roll

How many Pokémon are there?

There are 1,025 Pokémon species across nine generations, from Bulbasaur in Kanto to the newest Paldea additions. Every one of them is in this generator, along with alternate forms like Mega Evolutions and regional variants.

How many Pokémon types are there?

There are 18 types. The list has been stable since Generation 6 added Fairy to the original 17. A Pokémon has one or two types, which decide its weaknesses and resistances - try the type randomizer to explore every possible pairing.

How many Pokémon generations are there?

Nine so far: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar and Paldea. Each generation added a new region, new species and usually a new mechanic, from abilities in Gen 3 to Paradox Pokémon in Gen 9.

What are the odds of finding a shiny Pokémon?

In the recent mainline games a wild Pokémon has a 1 in 4,096 chance of being shiny. Older games used 1 in 8,192. Methods like breeding across language regions or hunting outbreaks improve those odds. The shiny switch on this site only changes the artwork you see here.

What is the rarest Pokémon type combination?

A few combinations belong to a single Pokémon. As of Generation 9, Electric/Dark appears only on Morpeko, and some pairings have never been used at all. The type randomizer can roll any of the 171 theoretical dual-type combos, including the ones no Pokémon has yet.

What is the strongest Pokémon?

By raw base stat total, Arceus sits at 720 without any form changes, while Mega Rayquaza and both Mega Mewtwo forms reach 780. "Strongest" in practice depends on the format, the moveset and the rest of the team, not just one number.

Can you breed legendary Pokémon?

Almost none of them. Legendary and mythical Pokémon sit in the No Eggs Discovered group, so they cannot breed. The one oddity is Manaphy, which produces Phione when bred - and Phione never evolves into Manaphy.

What is a Nuzlocke challenge?

A self-imposed ruleset that makes a playthrough harder. The classic version allows only the first encounter per route, requires nicknames, and retires any Pokémon that faints. Our challenge guide walks through building a fair random pool for one.

How do Pokémon natures work?

A nature raises one stat by 10% and lowers another by 10%, so the same species can play very different roles. Twenty of the 25 natures follow this pattern and five are neutral. The natures guide lists all 25 with the stats they touch and which mint mimics each one.

What does STAB mean in Pokémon?

Same-type attack bonus. When a Pokémon uses a move matching one of its own types, the move deals 1.5× damage. It is the main reason type coverage matters when you look at a randomly generated team.

How do I generate random Pokémon?

Choose a count, set any filters you want, then press Generate Pokémon. Lock a pick to keep it while rerolling the other slots.

Can I copy my Pokémon team?

Yes. Add your picks to the team tray and press Copy names for a comma-separated list. You can also save teams in this browser.

About the Random Pokémon Generator

What is a random Pokémon generator?

A random Pokémon generator picks Pokémon for you from the full National Pokédex so you do not have to choose. Pokémon Lab covers all 1,025 species and 1,351 forms from Kanto to Paldea. Pick a count of 1, 3, 6 or 12, set a few filters if you like, and press Generate. Every roll uses your browser's secure random number source, so the result is not weighted toward popular picks.

Who uses it, and for what?

Most people come for one of four things. Nuzlocke runners use it to draw a starter or a full team and then live with the result. Fan game makers use it to find species for a region. Friends use it to settle "who would you rather" arguments. And competitive players use it to practise against teams they would never build on purpose. If you want a challenge run, the challenge guide explains how to set the pool up.

Filters that actually change the pool

You can narrow by type (any or all), generation, home region, evolution stage, legendary or mythical status, abilities, base stat total and form groups such as Mega, Gigantamax or regional variants. Lock a card you like and re-roll the others, or flip on shiny artwork. Once you have a team of six, send it to the team planner to check weaknesses, or compare two picks in the compare tool.
